FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about psychotherapy in Mississauga and across Ontario, sessions, virtual care, insurance, and what to expect.

What happens in the first therapy session?
The first session is a chance for us to meet and begin understanding what brings you in. I will ask about your current concerns, relevant history, and what you hope to gain from therapy. You can ask questions about my approach, how sessions work, and anything else that feels important. There is no pressure to share everything at once — we move at a pace that feels safe for you.
How long are therapy sessions?
Regular therapy sessions are 50 minutes. The free consultation call is 15–20 minutes. I recommend meeting weekly or every two weeks, especially at the start, so we can build momentum and establish a therapeutic relationship.
Do you offer a sliding scale?
Yes. I offer a limited number of sliding-scale spots for clients who need reduced fees. This is discussed during our consultation call. Sliding scale is based on income and circumstances — if cost is a barrier, please mention it when you book.
How does insurance and payment work?
I provide receipts after each session that you can submit to your extended health benefits. Many plans cover psychotherapy from a Registered Social Worker (RSW). I do not bill insurance directly — you pay per session and use the receipt to claim reimbursement from your insurer. Check your plan for coverage limits.
Is virtual therapy effective?
Yes. Research supports that virtual psychotherapy is as effective as in-person therapy for many concerns. I use a secure, PHIPA-compliant video platform. Virtual sessions allow you to meet from anywhere in Ontario without travel. Some people find it easier to open up from a comfortable, familiar space.
What is the difference between psychodynamic therapy and CBT?
Psychodynamic therapy focuses on understanding underlying patterns, early experiences, and unconscious processes that shape how we think and feel. CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) tends to focus on current thoughts, behaviours, and practical skills to manage symptoms. I integrate both: depth-oriented exploration for lasting change, plus practical CBT and DBT skills when useful.
Do you work with adolescents?
Yes. I work with adolescents aged 13 and older. Sessions focus on building trust, exploring identity, managing emotions, and navigating relationships at home and school. I take a relational, attachment-based approach and can work with parents as appropriate.
